about

Ron Bailey- "When we prepare for the Oregon Country Fair, people come to town a couple of weeks before the show and that makes for some wonderful hangs. I was working on a reggae style song about the devil. I’ve always had a pet peeve about how much influence a make believe character has had on our society and how this make believe guy is blamed for what are quite obviously grotesque human faults. I want him gone for good. I want him junked like other things we no longer need, so we throw them away. Good riddance.
I had written the first two verses about two of my favorite little people– first verse about Henry Early Sutherland and second verse about Chloe Sutherland, my nephew and niece. I was playing the song for Kate Ettinger at the kitchen table and sort of wrestling with the bridge. She suggested some chords and that led to the fantastic high impact build in the song. I said, “hey Kate we wrote our first song together”! She said, “no that’s your song, I didn’t do anything.” But I convinced her to help me write the last verse and lyrics to the bridge so in the end there is no doubt this was written by Kate Ettinger and me. Such fun."

lyrics

Oh Henry was a footloose rambler - All he wanted was to run and play
He grew up in a world of laughter - Henry if you wanna stay that way

Chorus:
Junk the devil – Push him away now
Junk the devil - Push him away

Chloe’s smile was like a big jack hammer - Leaving hearts in a rubble pile
She could dance like a no joke jammer - Chloe if you wanna keep that smile

-Chorus-

Are you afraid he’s gonna get ya - I bet your heart is beating fast
He’s getting closer - He’s close he’s gonna get ya
Cause you know that when he gets ya - That moment’s gonna be your last
He’s getting closer - He’s close he’s gonna get ya
He’s close, he’s closer, he’s close he’s gonna getcha
He’s closer closer yeah yeah yeah

My best friend is a super hero - Super human with a heart of gold
Drop kick like a tres fou Nanda - One punch - Save your soul
